We’ve been doing it since the day we were born. It’s something we do every day. Some do it better than others while some think everyone and anyone can do it. But to do it effectively requires skill that many have yet to master. It's something you have to continuously work out. No, I’m not talking about muscles. I’m talking about the art of communication.

It’s something that gets lost in translation especially in high-traffic environments where responsibilities are often handed off. And let’s face it. Not everyone is inherently good at communicating, communicating unnecessary information, none at all or just… differently. 

When first meeting someone, let alone someone elderly or with a developmental disability with limitations or challenges with communication, getting to know their preferences or triggers can feel like a guessing game. For whatever reason whether it be exhaustion or impatience, they don’t have the capacity to explain. They would rather you read their mind leaving both parties frustrated, leaving a bad first impression which can have a lingering sour aftertaste.
